For a band that has always thrived on the unconventional, Primus’s approach to finding a new drummer was never going to be standard. With the departure of longtime percussionist Tim “Herb” Alexander last fall, the search began for the next rhythmic backbone of one of alternative metal’s most eccentric acts. But instead of quietly auditioning musicians behind closed doors, Primus invited the world in, launching a web series that captures the raw energy, chaos, and excitement of the process.

Titled Primus Interstellar Drum Derby, the series takes viewers inside the band’s open auditions, a process that saw an overwhelming 6,100 drummers throw their hats into the ring. Among the hopefuls was Rory Dolan of lespecial, a musician whose deep admiration for Primus had shaped his own musical identity. His familiarity with the band’s catalogue, especially their unpredictable live renditions, made him a standout in the competition. Dolan’s audition, which became the focus of the series’ first episode, showcased a natural synergy between him and the remaining members of Primus—a moment that resonated deeply with fans.

But Dolan wasn’t the only name in the mix. The auditions brought together a collection of drummers spanning various backgrounds and genres, including Thomas Pridgen (formerly of The Mars Volta), Nikki Glaspie (Snarky Puppy), and Gergo Borlai. The presence of legendary musicians like Maynard James Keenan, Danny Carey, and Stewart Copeland only added to the spectacle, turning the search into a full-blown event.

When the dust settled, it was John Hoffman who ultimately secured the coveted spot. His chemistry with the band, his technical prowess, and his ability to slip seamlessly into Primus’s unpredictable musical landscape made him the natural choice. With Hoffman now officially in the fold, the anticipation builds for what lies ahead—an extensive North American tour that promises to be anything but ordinary.

This upcoming tour, which will kick off in late April, will showcase a new lineup and serve as a larger celebration of music and collaboration. Various members of Primus, Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer will come together to honour Keenan’s 60th birthday. Meanwhile, Dolan and Lespecial will continue forging their own path, with upcoming performances in the Northeast and at the Daze Between New Orleans festival.

By revealing their audition process, Primus has once again reaffirmed their commitment to unpredictability. Primus Interstellar Drum Derby isn’t just a behind-the-scenes look at their decision-making—it’s an invitation into the creative chaos that defines them.
