In the world of marching percussion, the right combination of skill, experience, and passion can leave a lasting impact on both students and audiences alike. Few embody this balance as seamlessly as Josh Hartwell, a dedicated educator and performer whose journey through the percussion world has now brought him into partnership with Mapex and Majestic Marching Percussion. As the newest addition to their roster of artists, Josh Hartwell brings with him a wealth of experience, a deep love for teaching, and an enthusiasm for the instruments that have shaped his career.

Based in Houston, Texas, Josh Hartwell has carved out a reputation as both an accomplished musician and an inspiring educator. His background includes a bachelor’s degree in music education from McNeese State University and a master’s degree in percussion performance from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. His time at UNLV was especially formative, not only in refining his technical abilities but also in introducing him to the instruments that he would later endorse. The Reflection series 5-octave marimba and 3-octave vibraphones became staples of his graduate studies, and the artists associated with Majestic—Alex Stopa, James Whiting, and Rachel Julian—were musicians he admired early on. The connection between artist and instrument was forged long before the official partnership, making this collaboration a natural evolution rather than a sudden shift.
Currently teaching at Pearland High School, Hartwell works alongside a team of talented educators to shape the next generation of percussionists. His career has spanned multiple facets of the marching arts, from his time with the Louisiana Stars in Drum Corps International (DCI) to his work with Foothill High School in Winter Guard International (WGI). His roles as director, technician, and composer have allowed him to influence programs at varying levels, demonstrating his adaptability and commitment to musical excellence. Beyond his contributions to competitive ensembles, Hartwell has also established himself as a sought-after clinician, eager to share his knowledge with students and fellow educators alike.
In addition to his academic and competitive work, he is also a co-owner of Flow Percussion & Entertainment, a professional percussion service that specializes in high-energy performances for events ranging from weddings to corporate gatherings. This venture reflects his belief that percussion is not just about technique and precision but also about energy, entertainment, and connection with an audience.
For Hartwell, joining Mapex and Majestic is more than just an endorsement—it is an opportunity to collaborate with a company that shares his values of quality, integrity, and passion for the art of percussion. His journey has been one of dedication, and now, with the support of Mapex and Majestic, he continues to push forward, shaping the future of percussion performance and education one note at a time.
